Choosing DIY Wood Flooring

by Kristin Yates

So, you have decided to install wood flooring for your next DIY flooring project. However, there are many decisions that have to be made when choosing your flooring. Which type of wood should you buy? Should you purchase engineered wood flooring or solid wood? Should you purchase prefinished or unfinished flooring? Here are some tips that will help you make some of those decisions.

The type of wood you choose for your DIY wood floor is largely going to depend on the style and décor of your room and the rest of the house, as well as your budget. There are dozens of different wood types to choose from, including oak, cherry, ash, mahogany, maple, and hickory. Another option, although it is not really wood, is bamboo flooring. This is becoming very popular due to its price and eco-friendliness.

The difference between solid wood flooring and engineered wood flooring is that engineered flooring is made up of several plys, with the grain running in different directions. Solid flooring is just one solid piece. Due to being more moisture resistance, engineered flooring is better than solid wood in basements and other high moisture areas, such as kitchens and baths.

The decision to purchase prefinished or unfinished flooring is based on several factors. The first one is price. Prefinished floors will have a higher initial cost. However, if you purchase unfinished flooring, you will have to purchase the materials to stain and seal the floor yourself. The next factor is style. If you are unable to find a prefinished wood flooring in a color you like, then finishing the wood yourself will give you more options. Finally, the last factor is time. Finishing wood floors is a very time consuming process. If you don't have the time or patience to tackle this yourself, you definitely want to purchase prefinished flooring.

Think about all of these DIY wood floor decisions before taking a trip to the flooring store. By having thought all of this through beforehand, it will make choosing your wood flooring much easier.
